An Archipelago of Unspoiled Beauty and Crystal Waters

Known as the ‘Pearls of the Adriatic,’ the Tremiti Islands are a small but magnificent archipelago located off the Gargano coast. Comprising five islands—San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio, and the distant Pianosa—this marine protected area is a sanctuary of biodiversity. With limestone cliffs, hidden sea grottos, and waters that shift from emerald green to deep cobalt, the Tremiti are a dream destination for snorkelers and nature lovers alike.

History, Myth, and Underwater Wonders

The Tremiti Islands offer a unique blend of wild nature and ancient history. On the island of San Nicola, you can explore the imposing Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, a fortress-monastery with a thousand-year history. On San Domino, the largest and greenest island, you can wander through fragrant pine forests or dive into the deep to see the submerged statue of Padre Pio. Whether you are trekking along the rugged coastlines or exploring the marine reserve by boat, these islands provide a timeless escape from the modern world.

FAQs Section

Can I visit the Tremiti Islands in one day?

Yes, many visitors take the morning ferry and return in the late afternoon. However, staying overnight allows you to experience the islands’ peaceful atmosphere after the last ferry leaves.

San Domino is the only island with a sandy beach (Cala delle Arene). Most other swimming spots are rocky coves or accessible only by boat, such as the stunning Cala Matano.

There is a frequent taxi-boat service (a 5-minute ride) that connects the two main islands throughout the day.

Prices for food and services are slightly higher than on the mainland due to transport costs. We recommend booking your ferry and accommodation well in advance during July and August.

San Domino has a large Aleppo pine forest that provides shade, but the other islands and the coastal paths are very exposed. Always bring a hat and plenty of water.
